NCT-BAG promotes ethical fishing for Amia calva, commonly known as the Bowfin, in North Carolina’s freshwater fisheries. North Carolina is one of the only states in the nation that recognizes the Bowfin as a sport fish, but most anglers know little if anything about this powerful species of fish. In addition, many myths surround the Bowfin, leading anglers to mistakenly consider it a nuisance, invasive, or “trash” species. NCT-BAG aims to reverse this trend and promote knowledge of the Bowfin that will lead to its recognition as one of the finest game fish in North America, where it is unique. In order to fulfill its mission, NCT-BAG contributes to the management of Bowfin fisheries as well as their scientific study. It has donated specimens for study in University Laboratories, cleaned trash from popular Bowfin waters, and organized an annual Bowfin tournament. In addition, its members contribute to the Bowfin Anglers Group website and submit their qualifying Bowfin catches to the North Carolina Angler Recognition Program (NCARP).
